History

Dermal fillers have revolutionized the field of cosmetic industry and have become a common aesthetic treatment for several cosmetic concerns.

The first known injectable agent was paraffin but its use was abandoned after complications such as migration (movement into the surrounding tissue) and granuloma formation (small area of inflammation) was reported.

In 1981, bovine collagen was the first agent to be approved by the FDA for cosmetic injections and since then many filler agents have been developed and approved by the FDA for cosmetic use.

Based on their longevity fillers are classified as temporary, semi-permanent and permanent with temporary fillers lasting less than a year, semi-permanent fillers for up to 1-2 years and permanent fillers lasting longer than 2 years.

Temporary fillers can lead to repeated injections over time and this could be perceived as a costly option compared to a permanent filler. Although the choice of permanent fillers may seem appealing, permanent substances do not adjust to the natural skin and bone changes that occur over time from the ageing process and can lead to complications that are often more difficult to treat than temporary fillers.

Process

The Aesthetic Doctor will carry out a consultation with you to find out your concerns and goals. The skin is then thoroughly cleansed to remove any make-up, followed by a sterile wipe. The dermal filler is then injected into the treatment area. Most clients find this process from no pain at all to medium pain.
