History

The medicinal use of salicylic acid was first documented by the ancient Greeks in about 500 BC. In ancient times, salicylic acid was used primarily as a pain reliever and to reduce fever. Native Americans are known to have widely used salicylic acid, in the form of willow bark, to treat pain, fever and inflammation.

The active extract of the bark, called salicin, after the Latin name for the white willow (Salix alba), was isolated and named by the German chemist Johann Andreas Buchner in 1828. In 1829, French chemist Henri LaRoux perfected the extraction technique. In 1853, another French chemist Charles Gerhardt produced acetylsalicylic acid for the first time, though it wasn?t marketed until the Bayer company patented the formula in 1899.

Today, salicylic acid has become a popular treatment for acne, and is used in chemical peels to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, and sun damage.

Process

Your practitioner will firstly carry out a consultation with you to find out your skin concerns and goals. Your skin is thoroughly cleansed before the active solution is applied. A protective barrier is applied to the most sensitive parts of your face such as the corners of your mouth, nose and eyes. Your practitioner will apply the first layer of acid solution to your skin. The number of layers and timing will vary for each individual. The peel solution will gently exfoliate the top layer of skin, smoothing the skin?s texture and boosting cell rejuvenation. At this point, you may feel a light prickly sensation and heat. Your practitioner will remove the solution before applying protection to your skin. The whole process will take 30 minutes.
